CR Calabria is a freelance writer and longtime Phase I human research subject. Cory's writing on labor, science, and health has been supported by the McCormack Writing Workshop, the Economic Hardship Reporting Project, the Sewanee Writers’ Conference, the Ragdale Foundation, the Spruceton Inn Residency—where he received the Tracy Kennard Emerging Writer Award—and the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, where he is now a panelist. A finalist for the 2025 Ninth Letter Literary Awards for his narrative journalism essay, "The Walkers," which profiles contemporary Phase 1 subjects as they participate in a 15-day clinical trial, Cory’s essays and reporting have been featured in Brevity, Commonweal, Strange Pilgrims, and elsewhere. Cory is working on his debut nonfiction book, a cultural history of the human research subject and exploration of what human research subjects can teach us about medicine. He lives in New Orleans, Louisiana.
